INTRODUCING DR JOHN'S DIGIT BEAR BRONZE AWARDS
'The Teddy Awards’
Good news…it is to easy to use, very supportive of your teaching and is motivational for children to work with. The aim of the software is to involve young children and SEN pupils in recording positive statements about what they can do or what they know.
The statements are targets for the children and relate to all areas of the QCA Foundation Stage and QCA P scales, not just ICT. In the development of this scheme it was felt that ICT should not be recorded in isolation and should reflect good practice in the Early Years such as ‘role play’ and the wider usage of ICT. The scheme works closely with ‘Every Child Matters’.
The software also includes QCA P Scales for SEN pupils to support inclusion. Therefore, the whole of the child’s Foundation Stage profile or QCA SEN assessment can be recorded easily using this software as a tracking tool. This saves staff many hours of work and makes this task manageable at last! All recording sheets in the database are printable and can be used for Reviews, IEP’s and Parents Meetings.
To make it fun for the children the statements are linked to 6 badges that they work towards: Creative, Technology, Software, Computer, Photo and Robot. The idea is that the children are observed by an adult whilst being involved in ICT activities….this covers role play, taking turns, being sensible with equipment as well as using ICT. Then at a suitable time during the day the child is asked to record with an adult what they can do or what they know using the software….they tell Digit Bear or you say he has been watching them work really well today so you will save their work in the computer. The child clicks on a statement and listens to what they can do or what they know. Each learning target is accredited by an adult with the child. This is saved in a database in the software for staff to refer to a child’s progress.
Digit Bear is a real teddy who the children can have in the classroom with them to talk to and help them with their work. Digit Bear has a ‘Home bag’ so that chosen pupils can take him home safely to tell parents what special things they have done today. The bag can also be used to introduce new small scale ICT equipment to the children…look what Digit Bear is going to help us with today.
Digit Bear has friends
Digit Bear has three friends called Cybercat, Micromouse and Webster. These characters are in the software and the children can choose one of Digit’s friends to be their friend too and help them ‘log on’.
This introduces the child to passwords and ‘log on’ procedures.
The STAFF AREA also includes both NC documents for the Foundation Stage and SEN P Scales for staff to refer to ‘at a click’. An ‘Ideas section’ for each Award Badge includes key word flash cards & favourite Websites …very popular!
