INTRODUCING DR JOHN'S DIGIT BEAR ACTIVE
Digit Bear Active is a child centered, I.C.T. based resource, which has been designed to provide a simple way of assessing and recording physical development during the foundation stage. It is curriculum linked to Excellence and Enjoyment and encompasses all five aspects of the Every Child Matters agenda. The nature of the product is such, that it touches all learning styles with the use of a visual, auditory and kinesthetic (VAK) approach to ensure Inclusion.
Physical Development in the Foundation Stage
“Physical development in the foundation stage is about improving skills of co-ordination, control, manipulation and movement. Physical development has two other very important aspects. It helps children gain confidence in what they can do and enables them to feel the positive benefits of being healthy and active. Effective physical development helps children develop a positive sense of well-being.”

Throughout the foundation stage, as part of the teaching and learning process, practitioners need to assess each child’s development in relation to the stepping stones and early learning goals that form part of the Curriculum guidance for the foundation stage. These assessments are made on the basis of practitioners accumulating observations and knowledge of the whole child.
Practitioners need to plan with assessment in mind to provide specific opportunities for all children to acquire and practice physical competencies.
It is commonly agreed that assessment and recording should be built around a practitioners planning. To assist in this;
• Digit Bear Active includes videos as a stimulus/focus for physical development assessment activities. Supporting each video;
• Digit Bear Active also provides a series of paper based activities for each of the early learning goals.
• Digit Bear Active, in line with Assessment for Learning, includes a child centered self assessment area. This is in the form of “I can” statements, which informs pupils of their achievements and future targets. To celebrate their achievements, a reward system is in place that records progress which informs children, staff and parents.
